California, 1923-1994

American painter and printmaker internationally recognized, belongs to thegeneration of artists from the fifties that followed the guidelines of Jackson Pollockabstract expressionism.

In the beginning he worked with large spots of color and light to dark paint drippings.His style is noted particularly for the synthesis achieved between gestural,spontaneous and chromatic abstraction. His painting has always revealed anoriental sensibility.

 

He studied botany and medicine at Berkeley and later art history. He began paintingin 1945 during his convalescence after being wounded in World War II.

In 1950 he traveled to Paris and made contact with Riopelle and B. Van de Velde.First is influenced by Monet in monochrome gray cloths, black and white. Followingthe example of Matisse is critical for entry into Abstract Expressionism, which showssuperb handling of color and a new approach to space.

From 1957 he travels frequently to Asia and forth between San Francisco resident, Japan and Paris. The importance of vacuum in the spatial conception of Oriental artis felt in his work, in which their spots with white color play support to define thespace, well maintained at the edges, forming a mighty fine grid, or burstingdisorderly.

Although best known for his paintings, Francis also feature as an engraver and sculptor. He also practiced his whole life but always applied watercolor and bold colors transparency never lost it.

His work is in numerous museums and international collections, notably: - NationalGallery of Art, Washington DC - Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco -Kunstmuseum Basel, Switzerland - Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, Texas - Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles - San Diego Museum of Art - TateGallery, London, UK.
